Creating Accessible Word Documents

In this section, you will learn how to:

  1. set your document language
  2. create contrast between the foreground text and background colors that pass WCAG 2.0 Level AA
  3. avoid the use of color alone to convey meaning
  4. choose fonts, font-sizes and colors that show well on screen
  5. apply and modify Word Styles to format your document
  6. ensure heading levels are applied in the correct order
  7. add alternative text descriptions for non-text elements, such as images
  8. create simple table structures with column header rows and descriptions if needed
  9. recognize the importance of avoiding floating objects, single cell tables for formatting, watermarks, using the B button for bolding or I button for italicizing
  10. provide descriptive hyperlink text
  11. format without inserting blank characters
  12. use Word's built in Accessibility Checker to check your document for things that may be inaccessible
